write about evolution and devolution. how do we unravel & re-ravel? think about what histories our bodies & communities & species & worlds are made of.
I like to think we learn something new with each generation.
I like to think I have a long-lost ancestor, at the top of my family tree, who found out fire was hot in the worst possible way.
I like to think their child found out peaches were edible in the best possible way.
I like to think the child’s child found out baked peaches tasted even better.
I like to think the child after that learnt how to paint in a cave in France.
I like to think that, several generations of children later, one learnt how to carve in a town in Italy.
I like to think that, several generations after, my great-great-great-grandfather learnt how to make a musket, when the Austrians came.
I like to think my great-great-grandmother was the first in my family to see the flag.
I like to think my great-grandmother was the first in my family to hear the Germans surrender.
I like to think my grandfather learnt what peace was, at least for a while.
I like to think my mother is learning that, too.
I like to think I’ll learn something, eventually.
I like to think I have, already.
I like to think I might learn more, still.
